Happy XGiving?
The Lions and the Cowboys play every Thanksgiving. Both teams are actually at least decent this year, so that's different, but that's not the point. The point is: I wonder if the Cowboys ever played the Redskins on Thanksgiving. 'Cause that'd be kinda fucked up. | | Tuesday, July 31st, 2007 | | 7:31 am |

Dai- er, Weekly Photo?
Some ruins with trees and cityscape in the background. ( Large Version )In other news, I finally got Puzzle Quest for the DS (the abbreviation PQ still always makes think of Progress Quest). The graphics and sound aren't as good as the PC demo, but Holy Hell is it addictive. When Tycho first mentioned that "it can trace its lineage back to the legendary Warlords series," I was skeptical, but it actually seems to capture the atmosphere pretty well. It's just as well that it turned out to be good then, because I require all Warlords games. In a related note, Ungor was always the name of my first hero in Warlords (maybe Warlords II) back when I was playing hotseat in college. Maxim
So, I think it's time to finally give up on Maxim. I mean, sure, it's mostly sucked for years, but Brett seems to have a lifetime subscription so I'll occasionally flip through one to make sure it still sucks and to check out ... how can I put this delicately? Boobs. Brett's complained about the photos looking too airbrushed, but I try not to notice. Until the last one I looked through that is. They actually had a picture of Gary Busey that looked decent, and I just don't feel right checking out chix in a magazine whose photo-retouching department is capable of that sort of feat. I mean, seriously: Gary Busey. Gary Busey. In the end it's all the same, you see: Hopeless misery | | Thursday, February 1st, 2007 | | 11:44 am |
Rocking it blog style
Saw an article on Gamespot talking about a Sony rep slamming the Wii: SCEA spokesman tells New York Times that Nintendo's new console doesn't belong in the same category as the PlayStation 3. I'm afraid I have to agree with him on this one. The Wii belongs in the category of "successful console." | | Tuesday, January 30th, 2007 | | 9:24 am |
One of my DragonCon pics this time.
This one's not as good, because I took it. And am also in it. And apparently even my long arms have their limitations when it comes to photo composition. That would be me on the right, with the taller, brunetter Cruxshadows dancer. Had to do the old "hold the camera out and take a picture of myself deal. I was going to ask her to pretend to like me, but she did it without being asked. Oh and it's from '05, which at least makes it more recent than the last pic. Flickr test
I keep meaning to add more pictures to my journal, for reasons I might go into later if it works. So, I went looking for places to store pics and found Flickr along with some of their streams. I suddenly find myself looking forward to DragonCon. | | Wednesday, January 3rd, 2007 | | 11:12 am |
Requiem for a Season
Being a Browns fan is like being in a bad on-again, off-again relationship. A couple months after you last broke up, you talk to some mutual friends. They tell what she's been up to in free agency and the draft, and it sounds like she might really be pulling herself together. You think, "good for her," and almost think about calling her, maybe getting back together, but then you realize you just can't do that to yourself. Not again. But the months go on, and you really start to miss her. Finally you hear from her around training camp, and she sounds good. She's really been working on some things, and it's going well. Sure, there are still some rough spots, but God knows you're not perfect either, how harshly can you really judge her? You find yourself thinking about your history together, and all the good times, even having her over to watch games with the family. Then she says she misses you too, and you just decide what the hell? Let's go for it. And some weekends, you know, some weekends it's really good. You find yourself glossing over the rough spots and thinking maybe this season it'll really work out. But then the old problems start coming back. She about breaks your heart with late-game endzone interceptions, but she says she didn't mean to do it, really. She's working on it, she's trying her best, and she'll get better, she swears. And you try to be supportive, you know, to be a good fan, and for a whlie things do get better. But then she let's another team run up a rushing record on her, and you just don't know if you can take it. And it gets you questioning yourself, you know? I mean, you try to be a good fan, you watch the games, you stand by her and don't pretend not to be with her when she goes through her rough patches, you're not one of those abusive fans who shouts things like, "we suck!" or, "why don't you just punt it now?" at the screen. You start wondering, maybe there's something you're not doing. Or are you just being too much of a pushover? Maybe she likes the abuse? And things get better for a game here and there, but finally you tell her you just don't know if you can be with a team that goes out of town and lies down for your division rivals. You don't want to hurt her, but it just gets to be too much to take, you know? And you kind of drift apart, but don't officially break up for a couple more weeks. It ends up being her who finally ends it. She says it's because of the end of the season, but you know you had your problems. And come on, other teams are still playing. You're not naive. But one way or another, she leaves, and you kind of sheepishly tell her to keep in touch, and she smiles and says, "you too." And even though she was the one to break it off, you know it's really for the best. But there's still a little part of you, somewhere, saying, "what if?" And thinking about next season.

God I hate being a football fan sometimes
I couldn't really expect the Browns to beat the hated Ravens, but they looked like they were in at least decent shape a number of times. Times like early in the second half, when the Browns put together a nice 84 yard drive for a touchdown to tie the game. The Ravens get the ball back, get stuffed for no yards on first down, a pass on second down falls incomplete, and Cleveland looks like it's in good shape to stop them, get the ball back, build some momentum and take the lead. What do we get instead? 70-yard completion thrown by Kyle Boller. Kyle Boller. Just terrible, I tell you. But there are other games, other teams I root for. Some of these other teams might actually make the playoffs. How about preseason Superbowl favorite Carolina? They get completely destroyed by the Steelers, losing even worse than the hapless Browns did last week. Rough. Now Carolina's basically out of the playoffs, and Pittsburgh, oddly enough, may actually be able to make it in. The Dolphins, my last vestige of a previous-hometown-team, were dominated by Buffalo. This effectively ended any postseason dreams Miami may have entertained. Well, what else can I root for here? I hate Dallas and loathe Owens, but they beat Atlanta last night. I wouldn't mind rooting for Nawrlins, partially because of the rebound after last year, partially because they've sucked so long, partially because my somewhat distant cousin Chris Port, used to play for them. So naturally they blew it, losing to GD Washington. I pretty much have to root against the Redskins anyway because my brother-in-law roots for them. If you knew him, you'd understand. Let's see... I don't much care about Detroit or Green Bay, but I tend to root against Favre, since he's been pulling this "will I retire" drama, and has a tendency to throw the rest of his team under the bus. So the dick sets some sort of record this afternoon. Should've guessed. I guess I can root for Philip Rivers, Marty, and the Chargers tonight. Which bodes ill for them. Plus I'm still too sick and dehydrated to make drinking beer seem like a good idea. Not that I'm above watching a game without beer - I did watch the debacle in Baltimore, after all. Come to think of it, maybe should not have refrained from drinking...

Belated Securom update
While waiting to hear back from Securom, I installed a couple files from GameCopyWorld - one to mimic the DVD image (sadly I was not able to get the DVD version through Ubisoft) and one to launch the Heroes executable. Presumably it intercepts any shell commands from Securom that go looking for disc emulation software and returns a, "naw man, we're cool," response. This worked like a champ. When I eventually got a new executable from the folks at Securom (and ran it directly, without loader program or the disc emulator running); it complained about the emulator software existing. Fortunately, said software installs/uninstalls pretty quickly, and after uninstalling I could try again. This time I got the original error, though it seemed to send me to a different web page for an explanation (which then redirected me to the first one). So, I sent another email to Securom with another analysis file. That done I went back to running the emulator/launcher setup, and found that the updated executable was actually up to date with the latest patch - I was worried that they'd only have updates for the original version. This time I got an email from someone with level 2 support saying there must be something crazy going on with my drive, and suggesting I resort to using my DVD drive (apparently having read my initial letter, but not that closely). I wrote back reiterating that I'd tried that, but the DVD drive did not recognize the disc at all. Eventually they wrote back and asked for some numbers from my CD, which I gave them after getting home and looking at the tiny type. I suspect this was just to assure themselves I actually did have a real copy of the game, but one way or another they eventually wrote back saying they'd put up a new executable. So, I downloaded that one and - wonder of wonders - it actually worked! Some time later I heard that the 1.2 patch had dropped, which would doubtless require me to go write them again, but people on the interwebs indicated that patch broke as much as it fixed, so I figured I wouldn't bother. In the meantime I've become annoyed with the contrived situations the campaign is putting me in and gone back to playing Titan Quest. It's a fun Diabloish game, and I'm a sucker for the ancient world, but it feels linear in a way that Diablo didn't. Dungeon Siege also had that linear feel. It may be related to the seeming refusal to write random dungeon generators for 3D engines. There's no reason it can't be done - I swear. Especially being as both of those games are effectively 2D over 90% of their playspace anyway. In the end I should probably just be happy they didn't go with Starforce. Fuck that shit anyway. An Open Letter to Securom Dear Unfortunate Tech Support Employee for an Unscrupulous Company, Let me tell you about my morning. I get a nice new copy of Heroes of Might & Magic V, install the game, download the 50MB patch, and finally get ready to do some gaming. Sadly, my hopes in this regard are shattered by a dialog box telling me to insert my original disc, rather than a backup. I find this to be surprising, given that the original disc was, in fact, in the drive. Indeed, I have never even made a backup of the software in question. Following the link to your website, I find myself instructed to enable DMA on my IDE controller. While not in the habit of making hardware configuration changes on the advice of random websites, I decide to give it a shot this time. Although the CD drive had indeed been set to PIO only, enabling DMA does nothing to improve the situation. Noting that my DVD drive was already not only in DMA mode, but Ultra DMA mode, I figure maybe I'll have better luck with that drive. That drive, as things turn out, cannot even read your crippled disc. Although nothing would surprise me more right now than to receive a prompt, workable solution to my problem, please find enclosed the analysis file generated by your program in (approximate) accordance with your instructions. I will admit that I did not do a fresh system boot, as that seemed like rather too much trouble to go through to elicit a form letter telling me that there was nothing you could do. I find myself amused that, pondering my current options - returning the game with the explanation that it is defective, or finding a crack on the internet - I could, indeed, do both. Given that your company appears to at least ostensibly be in the business of preventing piracy, I find this revelation ironic. Reason #3 for why I shouldn't have a webcomic
I woke up the other morning with a conversation in my head that seemed most suitable for webcomic format. I picture it as shot from behind, two guys sitting at a bar, talking to each other while facing forward, not looking at each other. Guy 1: They make a pill for that now, you know. Guy 2: They make a damn few of them. Levitra ... Cialis ... Progeria ... I think Guy 1: I was thinking of the original. Guy 2: Viagra? Guy 1: Cyanide. In case you're wondering, Reason #1 is that I can't draw, and Reason #2 is the fact that the comic would be updated about as often as this journal. | | Thursday, February 2nd, 2006 | | 5:48 pm |
